Introduction to Space Fission Systems Briefing Wed. July 16th in Training Auditorium
Dr. Michael Houts, Lead of the Nuclear Propulsion Group at NASA MSFC will give a 2 hour briefing on Space Fission Systems in the KSC training auditorium on Wednesday July 16 at 1:00 pm. All civil service and contractor personnel are invited to attend.
Interest in Nuclear Electric Propulsion (NEP) has developed within NASA, with the first mission to use NEP (Jupiter Icy Moon Orbiter) tentatively scheduled to launch in 2011. The presentation will include fundamentals of fission reactor operation and the basics of space fission system design. Differences between fission systems and radioisotope systems will be highlighted. Issues associated with fission system safety, reliability, performance, flight qualification, launch, and operations will be discussed.

The Federal Women’s Program Working Group is hosting a one-hour presentation on Mars Exploration to be given by Mr. Roy Johanson, Jr., on Friday, July 18, at 1:00 p.m. in the KSC Training Auditorium. Mr. Johanson is the Lead Ground/Airborne Support Equipment Systems Engineer for the NASA KSC Expendable Launch Vehicle (ELV) and Payload Carriers Program. The presentation will include a discussion of one of the proposed methods of going to Mars and a short animated film on the Mars Rover. Kennedy Space Center is offering Straight Talk on Preventing Sexual Harassment Training to Civil Service employees on a first-come, first-serve basis with Dr. Fred Soto in the Training Auditorium July 29 and July 30, 2003.
Expedition 6 Commander Ken Bowersox and ISS Science Officer Don Pettit are currently scheduled to visit KSC July 22nd to talk with employees about their mission aboard the International Space Station.
Their presentation to employees will be held in the Training Auditorium from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m.
